'Hoops 4 Health' is an innovative sports development project that is aiming to use the power of basketball, one of the UK's most popular sports for young people, to make a positive impact on the health, activity habits and aspirations of young people in Liverpool.
EITC will be working with schools, community groups and significant partners in the health sector, most notably Liverpool Primary Care Trust (PCT), to administer Health & Lifestyle Road Shows, basketball coaching programmes and primary school basketball festivals.
'Hoops 4 Health' follows an innovative delivery framework detailed below:
1. Everton Tigers Health & Lifestyles Road Shows -
Professional basketball players visit schools delivering workshops
on healthy eating, smoking cessation, and the benefits of exercise
and giving children an introduction to basketball.
2. Basketball Coaching Programme - Each school is allocated a 4 or
5 week coaching programme enabling pupils to work with professional
basketball coaches who will reinforce the healthy lifestyle
messages given in the Road Shows.
3. Basketball Festivals - As a celebration of the children's
hard work over the 5 weeks coaching programme, all the schools are
invited to enter the Basketball Festival which will be staged at a
local secondary school on the 6th week of the programme.
The project is targeted to Year 5 pupils, currently being
delivered in over 30 schools in South and South Central Liverpool
area. Our objective is to increase the number of schools to over
120 around the city of Liverpool.
